Facts about GVSU Teacher Candidates

Facts about GVSU teacher candidates:

  • Our students have an average overall GPA of 3.38. To be admitted to the program, students must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher in their overall courswork, major and minor coursework, and the College of education professional program.
  • Our students complete at least 25 hours of work or volunteer experience with children or youth. GVSU teaching candidates have served as tutors and aides in classrooms, coaches, swim and piano instructors, child care workers, and after-school program workers and volunteers.
  • All have passed all three areas of the Michigan Basic Skills Test (reading, mathematics, and writing) with scores of 220 or higher.
  • All student teachers have completed the Teacher Assisting semester with a grade of B- or better and with positive recommendations.
