School Nurses Help Teens Quit... In the Short-Term |
|
|
Teenage students who talk with a school nurse about quitting smoking are less likely to be smoking in three months, according to a new study on smoking cessation. In the study of 1,000 Massechusetts teens, 11% of teens who spoke with a school nurse at four weekly sessions were still not smoking after three months, as compared to 6% of teens who only received anti-smoking materials. However, the nurses didn't seem to make a difference in the long-term. It turns out that after a year there was no difference in smoking cessation, regarless of the assistance the teens received. Researchers suggest that more and regular counseling sessions with a nurse may do the trick. |
